Booking a trial class

• Message first. Most gyms take trial bookings on their website, by LINE or Instagram message. Some accept web reservations only.
• Confirm the time. Schedules shift around school terms and holidays such as Obon, New Year and Golden Week.
• Ask what to bring. A clean T-shirt, shorts and a towel are usually enough for striking and grappling; many gyms lend a gi or gloves for trials.
• Traditional dojo. Karate and kobudo dojo often prefer an introduction or a polite request to observe (見学) first. Our beginner guide has the Japanese phrases and etiquette.

Karate fans will also want the Okinawa Karate Kaikan in Tomigusuku, the prefecture's karate centre, which offers short karate and kobudo experiences for visitors.
